Question by hunior: What kind of insurance coverage should I get for my motorcycle?
I have pretty much decided to get an SV650S as my first bike. Right now I am reasearching insurance coverages but am pretty much clueless. I don't know what coverage to get. This will be my first bike and I have very little experience riding. I have taken an MSF course and live in Los Angeles Area. I guess I am not looking for a particular insurance carrier(although it will help), I am looking for an explanations of the coverages so I know what to get.
I am paying for it in full.

  1. u would want to insure your bike the same way u would insure your car. make sure you’re liability limits are higher than your personal assets (house, cars, savings, etc.) so if u were ever sued none of these could be taken from you. if it’s a new bike you’ll probably want comp and collision on it too. also, if anyone is going to ride on the back, make sure u carry passanger hazzard. this protects u if your passenger ever sued u for injuries they sustained involving an accident on your bike. call around f/ the best rate for you, or call a local agent who can help you more with your coverage concerns. hope this helps!

  2. are you paying the bike in full or payments? payments= you will need full coverage….. Paid in full = if you dont care abt the bike if you total it, then just liability. as for liabilty, you should get as much as you can afford. it will pay the other driver/person enough without having them to sue you for the rest in an accident.

  3. Depending on the year of the bike and whether or not you have a loan on it.

You will have to carry Liability Insurance on it. I would recommend limits of 100/300/100. Take Medical payments of a minimum of $ 1000. If they have higher limits, go up to 3 or 5k. If you have a lein/loan on the bike you will have to take out Comprehensive and Collision coverage. Comprehensive is inexpensive compared to Collision. Get a lower deductible for Comprehensive (covers theft, vandalism, acts of nature). Get a Collision deductible of $ 250 or $ 500. You will also need Uninsured Driver coverage – I would suggest 100/300. You may also get Underinsured Driver coverage @ 100/300.

It all comes down to cost comparison. Do not drop coverage because of price.

  4. Minimum legal (basic liability insurance) is what I have.

    a) My motorcycle is worthless, so if you steal it, God bless you.
    b) Any crash is probably going to kill me, so I won’t be around to make an insurance claim anyway.
    c) “Uninsured driver…” see “worthless” above.

I’m with Progressive. Some of the other people here are with Geico.
