Is it legal (U.S.) to have multiple insurance policies (from different suppliers) on a car?

I saw a few members (probably potential fraudsters) ask this question, with most members to provide contradictory answers: it is illegal or that allowed. One guy mentioned a national database that would attract these policies on multiple cars. In answering one of you savvy in the yahoo lil biz insurance I would like to know 1) the name of the database and the name of the management company, 2) how much information is shared between the competing insurance (Eg, just the VIN, or does it include information to customers, policy limits, and cover types), 3) that can access this database (eg people or just insurance agents / companies), and 4) what kinds of insurance does not include (eg, just the car, or the range).

No, it's not legal. In fact in the language of the policy of most companies, it states that if a car is another insurance policy that would cover an incident, there would be no coverage of the original policy. Therefore Company A finds that B has Comanpy coverage in place on cars C. To inform and B as there are two policies both companies have the right to reject the request.
