If Im 17 and have my license, can I drive my friends car with insurance? or do I have to also have it?

The car is what is insured, not the driver, so you can drive anyone's car that is registered (has a current license plate) and has insurance on it. The required insurance is to protect OTHER PEOPLE if that car hits it. Any other insurance is optional.

As a licensed insurance agent, I have to speak up here. You can drive any car with permission from the car owner. However, are you legally covered by someone else’s insurance if you have an accident? If it’s your parents’ car, and you are on the policy, yes. If it’s your friend’s car, and you are not on the policy, then no.
In the event of an accident, and you are not covered by the policy on the vehicle, either you will have to pay the damages not covered by the policy owner’s insurance, or your parents’ insurance will have to pay. It’s a sticky situation, and if you have an accident, it can become an insurance nightmare. Best bet–don’t drive a car with insurance that you are not covered by the policy.
