How would a car insurance company know if i had a claim on previous insurance policy?
Question by Ivan Stephenson: How would a car insurance company know if i had a claim on previous insurance policy?
As above, i claimed on my existing car insurance policy about 2 years a go now. When getting new quotes they ask if i've had any claims in the past 3 years (which i have). But just wondering how would my new insurance company know either way if i put 'no claims'. Surely if they were all on one database they wouldnt be asking me in the first place?! Would they check for any reason? And what would happen if i was found out? Thanks.

They will check your VIN which shows your car's history.

The CLUE database has a record of your prior claims, and your insurer will see that.

It is on one database, but they do not check in advance. They ask you now, so that they can tell you what the rate will be *IF* the database says that you told the truth. After you accept the quote, then they check the database; if the database says you lied when they do check it later, then they charge you more than the quote.

They’ll check with the national Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange, to see if you’ve filed any claims.
As you asked last time, they’ll uprate you when they find out.

You asked this question a couple of weeks ago. They have it on the questionnaire to save themselves some time and cost looking it up. Whatever you put down they will investigate and they always have to know your previous insurance company and when they check that they will find out the truth. They have to check to give you the correct rates. If you signed any paperwork which you swore was truthful and they discovered you falsified it, they will deny you insurance.
