Don’t Call Obama a Socialist; He’s a Corporatist
www.RonPaul.com - 04 Lately many have characterized this administration as socialist or having strong socialist leanings. I differ with this characterization. This is not to say Mr. Obama believes in free markets by any means. On the contrary, he has done and said much that demonstrates his fundamental misunderstanding and hostility toward the truly free market. But a closer, honest examination of his policies and actions in office reveals that much like the previous administration he is very much a corporatist. This, in many ways, can be more insidious and worse than being an outright socialist. Socialism is a system where the government directly owns and manages businesses. Corporatism is a system where businesses are nominally in private hands, but are in fact controlled by the government. In a corporatist state, government officials often act in collusion with their favored business interests to design policies that give those interests a monopoly position to the detriment of competitors and consumers. A careful examination of the policies pursued by the Obama administration and his allies in Congress shows that their agenda is corporatist. For example, the healthcare bill that recently passed has not established a Canadian-style government-run single-payer healthcare system. Instead it relies on mandates, forcing every American to purchase private health insurance or pay a fine. It also includes subsidies for low income Americans and government run healthcare ...

[Continuation of my last post] I doubt anyone who gets that far in life can really be honest enough or good enough to not be bad. Everyone must realize that people will most likely not be able to change anything. It’s next to impossible. But I do agree with what Ron Paul has to say.

Socialism isn’t evil, it’s a human idea that was created and is equal to the free market system many countries have. It’s nothing but an idea like MONEY. Except for that, yes, Corporatism is bad. It should be stopped. But for gods sakes, what American president wasn’t? Just get over it, also, let us all remember the South Park episode about voting real quick: you will always have to vote for either a douche, or a turd sandwich in the end. So who gives a shit really?

Early american history is a continual struggle between those who want to limit the Federal state (like Jefferson) and those who want to expands its powers for their own sake (people like Hamilton). Unfortunately eventually the Hamiltonian faction won and gave hos the disasterous monster we have in the US today.

Socialsm is impossible because it supress people and prevent economic calculus, though destroying the price system. Corporatism requires a central state which can interfer in the economics system on behalf of those who control it. Once such a state exist it becomes a struggles between groups to control it for their own gain, and it grows continually. We havent found a permanent way to prevent this yet. The US constinution is the best so far, and it still failed.

Socialism is basically state control of the means of production to achieve some utopian end. This has 2 basic problems. 1) command economy is hoplessly ineffective and 2) what do you do with the people who dont share the utopian goal.

The funny thing is Bush was a corportist as well, but where was the hillbillies then? Anyways, isn’t by definition socialism is government by the people FOR the people. Meaning the government does things to help the common citizen NOT the corporations. That’s why socialism isn’t bad by definition.

I love Ron Paul but he describes socialism as communism which is incorrect is it not? In socialism the people own the companies and manage it through a voting system. In a communist system, THAT’S when the companies and everything is owned by the government. But I just could never imagine Ron Paul getting that wrong.

(Not to be confused with a Neo-Conservative, which he most definitely is not)
